In Purulia, West Bengal, we work with khadi twill woven through the MG Gramodyog Sewa Sansthan Foundation, where a community of spinners and weavers continue their craft on handlooms. Once woven, the cloth is passed to Md Ashraf from Bengal, who has carried the Ari chain stitch tradition for many years. He stretches each panel on a frame and guides the needle slowly across the fabric, letting the embroidery find its place before the garment is cut and sewn. The twill gives the cloth its grounding, while the embroidery adds a raised dimension that can be felt in hand and seen as it shifts with light.
