Daftar (the office) then, was never simply
about labour. It was a world with its own cadence,
a place, a purpose, that informed the lives of
the men and women who passed through
its doors every morning.

HAND EMBROIDERY

Khadi, a hand-spun and handwoven organic cotton fabric, is woven for us by Udyog Bharti. On this base, Md. Ashraf — a master embroiderer from Bengal — works with ari chain stitch to create flowing rhythms across the frame. Each panel is embroidered patiently by hand before it is stitched together, so that the garment emerges with khadi’s natural texture, traced with the fine signature of Ashraf’s embroidery.

BANDHANI

We work with artisans at Khamir Crafts in Gujarat to create our Bandhani fabrics. The craft involves binding sections of cloth with thread before dyeing, creating patterns that emerge where the dye cannot reach. Once untied, the geometry reveals itself – a record of every knot and every pause in the process. In our studio, these fabrics are reinterpreted through design and construction, keeping the character of the original craft while shaping it into new forms.

It was in the modest charm of the daftar’s setting, that a community was built through a variety of gestures: the mid-morning chai passed from one hand to another, the patient mentor leaning over a desk, the familiar rustle of papers, the ceiling fan turning above a well-worn table, marking time in gentle circles.

The season leans into materials that feel lived-in, echoing an era where clothing held both balance and flair.
